In which Ewen adds property lawyer to his resume

Postby Arva » Sat Nov 23, 2013 7:40 pm

So....how do we (Ewen) finagle the legal transfer of Ternua to...well...us.
I feel like a new person....

While Sir Meden's puzzler is worth cogitating about, I suppose, the larger pattern seems to be Meden delgating these insoluable problems to Ewen, unrelentingly hammering the issue regardless of any more nuanced suggestion that is put forth, and then facts on the ground change and obviate the task entirely. In other words, Sir Ewen is not going to lose sleep on this.

Meden did not seem to grasp the crux of Ewen's logic. If we seize Ternua de facto and can delay the transfer to the new owner until the king dies, then one of two things obtain. Brandis wins and we all go to the block (in which case, who cares who holds Ternua?), or Firith prevails and can grant Ternua as he pleases. In the interim, we possess the bridge over the Nephen, which helps the Firith contingent. By that logic, I still believe our energy should go into delaying any transfer and hope the king worsens. (Can I say that??)

Since you still hold the King's warrant, depending on how you play this, you might not go directly to the block ...

There does seem to be an opportunity to play both sides at least in the short term.

Gets some men, ride to Turnua take it over. Use the King's Warrant as a justification and hold the crossing of the Neph. We can even wait for the moment the King dies and then ride out. They onlymguard one gate for crying out loud.

Exactly. That's the plan we discussed in session, and proposed to Meden, who basically agreed but kept insisting that we come up with a more durable legal way to hold the keep as well. We talked about garrisoning the place with Ewen's men and assigning an NPC to oversee the garrison, as GM doesn't want the party split and Meden wants Ewen in Tashal to represent Vemion in the event of the king dying.

Absolutely

But strictly within the logic of the game, Ternua is strategically critical enough that Sir Baris or Sir Aeomund leading the garrison would make perfect sense. As it stands, we either have to pull Lady Aefawynn Barthy away from Varayne at the very moment we are expecting Varayne to host an enormous tournament, or we tap ... well, who DO we tap??

Yes, the thought had occurred, with the objection being the stripping of our secret military resources in Tashal just on the possible eve of a succession struggle. But I agree that he is probably the best and most capable choice for holding Ternua and the bridge over the Nephen.

But it raises the larger issue of how thinly stretched we will be, with Varayne, Ternua and Tashal all possible loci of conflict in the upcoming weeks. Perhaps we should look at the strategy we used going to Heru: buy up the available mercenary companies before someone else gets them first? If we are dicing for a barony, we are going to have to splash some silver around, and there is always Thilisa's "dowry"...

If the Firiths are with us then the bridge over the Neph and Turnua would be a huge strategic coup. We could even hold the bridge against both parties publicly ans see how things play out.
