Azura 30, 730 - At Tandir

Postby Matt » Mon Sep 12, 2005 9:08 am

Map of Tandir here.

As the sun rises on the 30th of Azura, a light, low-lying fog shrouds the town of Tandir, obscuring it from view, and making the castle appear almost to be rising out of the very mists. As it burns off, peasants can be seen about their business, moving about the fields, beginning the preparations to plow the fields for winter wheat. The herders move animals to the commons, and women work in the gardens and cottages.

The castle too, is alive with activity. The gates open and several small carts wend their way up the hill making deliveries. A company of troops leaves and marches down the hill and around to the north - out of sight for the moment.

Next steps?

Patience and observation at the moment I believe. Stay hidden and watch the comings and goings, troop movements, ect...

"It would be best to put up an observation schedule and also a camping rotation. What do you say, Lord Igon? Proposals from anyonye?" Laenvan looks in the eyes of each and everyone of the warband who is present and awake. Then he continues to tend to his equipment while he waits for answers...

[GM: If I'm not mistaken, Ulauf had suggested scouting a better location. There will be no moon tonight, so something like that would have to be done before the sun sets. I'll give others a chance to weigh in before I move on with the day.]

Now that the fog has burned off, the warband can get a good look at Caer Tandir. The walls of the outer bailey are about twenty feet tall with the towers at thirty feet. The inner bailey is higher, and the the largest tower is at least sixty feet tall. Around mid-morning, a lone man makes his way up the trail to the castle gates and is admitted. After about twenty minutes, he emerges with an escort of five legionnaires who take him to the inn, leave him there and return to the castle.

Come early afternoon, some two companies come around the hill from the north and go into the castle. Around this time, Ulauf, who had gone foraging returns to the camp with nine mandays of vegetarian fare.

Laenvan looks at with a grumbling stomach at the fair that Ulauf has brought back. "Does anybody know how to make a fire without smoke? I would really like to eat something warm from time to time. What do you think?"

Ulauf looks at Laenvan with a smile on his face and says "you have eaten at too may tables my friend. The sort of timber that burns determines the amount of smoke, the wetter the timber the more smoke, also the hotter the fire the less the smoke, but my friend there is no such thing as a smoke free fire."

Ulauf continues "I think that considering where we are and what we are doing cold meals will have to suffice for now. Better to eat cold today and eat hot on the morrow, than eat cold today and swing on the morrow, my friend."

Ulauf looking towards his companions says "The inn in the town is intriguing me, the man walked from the inn to the castle and was admitted, he then returned to the inn with an escort. The escort then returned to the castle. The inn was about the only building in the town that had any sign of life from inside and there was no noise of any note, but the light from within made this building stand out above the others."

"I think the inn might be a building worth paying more attention too!"

"I wonder if I should pay the inn another visit tonight and see if I can get a better layout of the building, so that if we decide that this building is worth more of our attention we will have good knowledge already."

That man does seem to have some sort of importance to him... I could not tell how he was dressed. Maybe he's a merchant or some sort of herald?

Although at a distance, he seemed of moderate dress - no peasant to be sure. Indeed, after a short time elapses, he exits the inn, and starts alone along the northeast road between the Ivinian and North Commons.

"Your words are wise beyond your age, Ulauf" Laenvan agrees with a nod. "No hot meal then..." He gulps dramatically but with a broad smile.

Next to get as much sleep as possible, you never know when the occasion will arise in the near future, Laenvan tries to get through his daily training as good as possible. For at least half an hour he mimiks firing arrows, some shots seem to be long distance other a rapid fire. He doesn't use arrows for this but he pulls the string as if he were. After a short pause he draws his triangular bladed shortsword and straps on his buckler and starts to mimick a fight. His mouves are precise and quickfooted. To any casual observer it becomes clear that this man relies more on swiftness and surprise than on brute force...

Some time after Ulauf leaves, you see him make his way past the crossroads north of the fields. The town continues in its routine, and at one point, about an hour after Ulauf sets out, a troop of about a dozen horse leaves the castle, and heads south out of town. The lead rider is wearing arms, but you cannot tell what at this distance save that the field is black.

Laenvan stares after the leading rider who bears the arms. He shakes his head as if to clear his thoughts trying to remember...

None of you clearly see what heraldic device there actually was on the shield or the surcoat. However, you do recall that the Earl of Westmarch's arms are on a field of black. (It doesn't help that so are most of the Legion's surcoats.)

About an hour after the troop rode out of the castle, Ulauf returns with the fellow you saw earlier in tow.

Ulauf steps forward "Vagnar, this is my cousin Igon, my brother Jorst, Olaf and Sven of clan Seld, Laenvan Hawkeye and Erdrick. My companions I introduce Vagnar, he is a physician in town, it appears that he has access to the castle and the town."

"He has told me of the battle of Tandir, with the battle going badly for our men but it appears that all fought for our King against the invaders. The King has been moved, he left 2 days ago and most of the garrison has left as well leaving only the 1st legion here." Ulauf looks towards Vagnar and continues "that is correct, is it not Vagnar?"

"I am sure that you all have questions for him, I am sure Vagnar is more that willing to answer them for you."

Pointing to a open area amongst the trees Ulauf says "Please, Vagnar have a seat." Ulauf moves over to his pack and returns with a mix of vegetarian fare "Here, you must be hungry, it is not much, but it is all we have at the moment."

"Do you have any belongings in the town that you need to collect, we can to in tonight if you wish."

A quick correction - this is the description of Lord Verakaar and his men trying to retake Tandir after Verakaar raided Geldeheim. They fought against the invaders, but not on behalf of King Alegar. And to say it went badly is an understatement - they were annihilated. Recall what Lady Hoeg and later the wounded man told you.

"Ulauf, all save that I can not say whether this Lord Verakaar struck on behalf of King Alegar or for his own interest."

"Also, my access to the castle is dubious. Any men in need would come to me in the town, where I also serve the needs of the civilian populace, but I suspect that should an officer fall ill, I would be summoned up."

"i can easily fetch my remaining possessions this evening, but if you are low on rations it occurs to me that Ulauf and I might go in and purchase rations for a few days, perhaps explaining that, having met with the local midwife, I now know where to go to gather medicinal herbs to enhance my currently limited supply."

Ulauf shakes his wondering what he was thinking "Of course you are correct I meant Lord Verakaar, please excuse me."

"As for rations we have nearly a tenday each, however, if you were to join us I would be best if you could purchase your own, if not we can come to some arrangement. We are trying to keep our tack just in case we need to flee from here and will not have time to forage on the move."

"How big is the garrison of the castle?"
