Halane 10-11, 730 - Approaching Pethwys

The Public Area for the PBF

Postby Matt » Tue Jan 24, 2006 5:18 pm

The warband sets out, everyone ready, everyone tense. The rain has held off, and the three-quarter moon casts good light even through the canopy of the forest. With the mules (and Sven) bringing up the rear, the group travels along the route scouted earlier in the day.

As the warband nears Gowys, the pace slows and those up front warily check for an ambush. For a time, every sound, every footstep, seems magnified, and the warband painstakingly draws nearer to the village. Somewhere in the distance an owl hoots, and each man can feel the hackles raise on his spine.

Soon, the smell of hearths is added to the sounds of the night. The occasional flicker of light escapes through shutters but the village is otherwise dark. In the moonlight, the warband can see that the gates of the manorhouse are closed, but there is no sign of a watch. Slowly, ever so much slower than a normal pace, the party makes its way around the village. After almost two hours, the warband has circled around the village, and has reached the trail again. Still proceeding with caution, the march continues for another hour, at which time they make camp for the night.

Not a soul has been seen.

Once the campsite has been selected, Ulauf takes a wander around with Laenvan to make sure the area is secure.

As there will be no fire, Ulauf will watch Soran taking care of the mules.

Ulauf makes his way over to Dragoran where he sits down and in whispered tones makes conversation for nearly an hour.

After which he stands up and finds a place to lay down, after setting up his sleeping gear he grabs a quick bite to eat from the rations he carries.

Not long after he lays down to get some sleep before his watch.....

The area is secure - or at least seems to be, and Soran, after tending to the mules, has gone to sleep.

After having checked the area with Ulauf Laenvan unstrings his longbow to not overtstrain it. He is not too happy to have only one bow at his disposal but for the moment this has to be so. Then he takes some bits from his rations while he still paces the border of their camp, taking already his watch. Sometimes he he stops his steps, closes his eyes and concentrates on his smell, then on his hearing to check if there is some anormality out there and then continues his path. As a seasoned veteran he knows about the dangers of routine and so he abruptly changes his direction or the rhythm when he stops to smell and to listen. If there is someone or something out there who tries to sneak on them Laenvan will do everything to make it the most difficult possible...

After the camp has been set up and everyone settled, Igon will speak a few quiet words of encouragement and the days good fortunes with each in turn. Afterwards he leads those that feel the need in a quick prayer before settling down with Icehammer close at hand.
