If the gargun are begining to retreat, then we should advance, using what cover we can... keeping out of line of fire from the gargu bows. Our archers , who most likely have the better range can keep up the gargu archers busy, giving Jorst and Igon, who are the most heavy armoured of the group a chance to close and save the fallen man.

Laenvan wrote:After his first rain of arrows Laenvan takes more time to carefully aim. One
arrow - one enemy down. Either outright dead or at least incapacitated for
this skirmish...

To keep up with the warband Laenvan advances with them (two to three steps)
between each arrow, then stops to aim and shoot. He is able to fire any five
seconds an arrow (two seconds to draw and knock, three seconds to aim and
shoot).

When he gets too close to the garguns (under 10m) or runs out of arrows
(which will well be possible at this rate of fire) he will fix his helm,
take his buckler and draw his shortsword with this exotic triangular blade.

The best laid plans ...

Most of the orcs dip behind the cottages momentarily shielded from view. The four who remain have drawn their bows, but it is Ulauf who gets off the first shot. His arrow strikes one in the chest, knocking him down. Laenvan's arrow misses, but Erdrick finally hits one. A minor wound to the right thigh.

The three orcs shoot, and two arrows go far astray, although one came close to hitting Laenvan. At this moment, Vagnar points to the hills and yells, "Look!" With horror, the warband sees dozens more gargun moving down the hills. A few are close enough to already have bows out, and more arrows fly towards the party. Most miss, but one grazes Soran's left forearm and another strikes the lead mule in the flank.

The nearest cover is the thin stand of trees some hundred feet to the west, or the first two or three cottages, about the same distance north.

Igon looks at the orc reinforcements in disgust, relaizing that fate has shifted out of their favour... deciding between getting surounded and cut down by arrows in thin woods by a foe he can't out run or surrounded and possibly burned out in a hut, Igon makes his choice...

"To the huts! Make for the Huts! we'll hold them there and thin them out before making a run for it!"

As the warband dashes for the nearest cottage, the archers cover them. Soren and the mules bring up the rear. With a glance, Ulauf shifts his fire to the orcs up in the rocks - neatly skewering one in the neck. Although the orc falls behind the rock, it certainly looks like a clean kill. Meanwhile, Laenvan, who would have kept shooting at those in the village, realizes they're running for cover and so he too shifts to the easier targets. His arrow strikes home in one orc's chest just as he was drawing his bow. He staggers. Erdrick alas, misses.

The orcs in the village, as they're retiring, do not shoot back. However, more have gotten into position in the rocks. Arrows fly all about the warband, one strikes the fleeing muletier in the back, killing him instantly. Another strikes one of the mules in the flank and this arrow lodges deep, causing the poor beast to stagger for a moment, and then keel over. Ulauf successfully dodges on arrow, and then a second. An arrow races for Igon who manages to block it with his shield, and another arrow finds Laenvan who dodges it. A last arrow strikes Soran's body, but he's past caring.

As the rest of the warband reaches the nearest hut - the two remaining mules are trotting towards the river - Erdrick heads for the hut, now only Ulauf and Laenvan providing cover. They too begin to back towards the hut, waiting for more arrows, but for the moment, the gargun have stopped shooting. Soon, all save Soren and the mules are safely under cover, the archers warily peering out the windows and all waiting for the next move.

"Damn them!" Cries Igon as he peers out a half cracked door looking at the Mules and Soren's body. "We can say good bye to them... the maggots will have them for dinner now... and us if were not careful."

Still cursing, Igon shuts the door... "My friends, Its seems that we have come to a bump in the road on our little journey and I'm not to sure how we're getting out of it. Any ideas?"

Jorst looking towards the group says "If we can hold out here tonight we might be able to make a run for it in the morning." With a look at Ulauf, Laenvan and Erdrick he continues "With the grace of the Grey Slayer our archers might be able to stop them from setting fire to this house."

"With a little luck they might take the mules and leave us be if we prove to be to hard to get."

Ulauf motions Sven towards a window opposite Laenvan and whispers to him "Keep a sharp eye, my friend."

Ulauf moves towards the centre of the cottage and begins to search for fire wood to set up in the hearth. His longbow is never more than arms reach from him as he goes about his work trying to start a fire.

"Might as well make ourselves comfortable."

Ulauf gives his brother a wink.

Could we try to rescue the mules. There is a lot tied up in those animals. What if Laenvan, Erdrick and I can keep the gargun at bay long enough for a resuce party to retrieve the mules. (Can the mules be seen nearby?)

"Cousin if you know a pray that will help us, I think now is the time for us to join you in saying it."

"I have been thinking that as the night progresses we might yet set nearby cottages alight to provide us with some light, these cottages will burn for some time and will smoulder on for some time after that." With a look around the room Ulauf continues "This might keep the gargun at bay for the night so that as Jorst has suggested we might make a run in the morning."

OOC - How close are the mules? Could one or 2 of us make a run for them under the cover of bows and get back before the spawn are on us?

The mules have moved off in the direction of the river - away from the warband and the gargun, apparently having made the sensible decision to get as far away from all the sharp, pointy things as possible. They're drifitng southward.

The gargun are dispersed amongst the rocks to the west, so it's difficult to say which of them is in charge. While some are moving about, they are not, for the moment, advancing.

After a brief conversation with Ulauf, Igon turns to the group...

"I think we are stuck here for awhile, at least until dawn... There is to my count , 40 of the bastards out there and only 4 or so hours of light left. I suggest that we hole up here until dawn. During the night we kill those that we can and come morning, depending on the situation we can think about making a break for it." Nodding towards Ulauf... "Ulauf had a suggestion that all should hear and decide on, personally I don't care for it as it splits us up and weakens us... it does have some merrit though and should be heard."

With that Igon steps back to the window to keep an eye on the spawn as Ulauf lays out his suggestion...

As Ulauf begins to speak, there is a shout from the rocks. Igon holds up his hand.

"Hoomuns!" comes a loud raspy voice with an unpleasant tone. "Pal hoomuns! You fight well - brave hoomuns fight many wit' one hond. I Lengarrtz! King of Kyani Amekt! Hoomuns tell king want know - king let pal hoomuns go. Say hoomuns?"

Laenvan shakes his head. "What is this... A trap? I cannot believe it. A gargun who is willing to negociate. Who has ever heard of such a thing. Or is there anew some wicked sorcery involved..." He looks at his companions. "What is his reason to let us go? What does he want and seems to be here right where we are now?" He starts to look closer at the hut they are in...

It is a peasant hovel, mostly empty, and from the looks of where the gargun were earlier, one they had already searched. This Ulauf is able to confirm with a glance to the floor.

Igon looks to his companions and shrugs.... "We are stuck here either way. Might as well play along and get some information along the way."

Igon tuns to the window and calls out... "What is it you seek King Lengarrtz? Why do you come down from your mountains into human villages?"

From the rocks comes the reply, "We want hoomuns of village they call Fay-gin." This last is said slowly and by syllable, as though it were difficult to pronounce. "Kyani Amekt give beast-hairs for shiny metal long time - before Lengarrtz king. But no Fay-gin hoomuns now. Where go? Pal hoomuns know?"

Ulauf who was about to tell the group about his idea, on hearing the gargun speak moves away from the fire in the hearth and moves towards the nearest opening at the other side of the cottage to see what is happening.

Fingering his longbow, Ulauf turns to Igon and says "See if we can get our mules back too!"

Igon calls out... "The humans from this village, fegyn have fled O' king. There is war to the north, brought by the Thardans of the east. Your friends and trading partners have fled for safety, where I can not say. We did not see them to the north... most likely the went south."

There's a pause, and then, with a tinge of confusion, "Run from war? Not good. Must fight in war. Pal hoomuns run from war?"
