Sir Hearn turns to Igon. "Lord Seld, it is not for me to gainsay my lord sheriff. I do not doubt your word, but neither do I defy him. If it is as you say, and you are here to negotiate an alliance with Kaldor, then it seems to me that you will find the right words to convince not only my lord sheriff, but His Grace the King."

He gestures towards the door of the inn ...

Vagnar sighs "Ah, well, I was hoping to see what I might add to my store of medicinals but Tashal is a much larger community, so I shouldn't take more than a bit to pack and be ready'.
They say I am mad...they make a good case.

Dragoran looks disgusted.

"And what pray tell, do you propose I use to walk with? My legs are not that strong and any kind of physical exertion can lead to me collapsing, hence why I have a staff. To lean on."

Spreading his placatingly, Dragoran continues.

"It would be odd for a lord to deny me my walking aid."

Sir Hearn turns from Igon to Dragoran, suspicion now clouding his face. "You have walked just fine from here to the castle and then back. I think you will have no trouble making it to a barge on the river. There you may sit to rest your weak legs if need be."

He turns back to Igon. "Lord Seld, we will place your weapons in a chest and bring it with us. Those which do not fit, I shall give to my men to guard. If this is acceptable, we shall leave for Tashal immediately as my lord Sheriff has commanded. If not, take your things, and quit this land. What say you Lord Seld?"

Reluctantly Laenvan hands over his longbow and his quivers and places his shortsword in the chest with the other weapons. The dagger he keeps on himself... he needs a tool to proper eat.

With the warband's weapons secure, Sir Hearn deputized a couple of the inn staff as porters and upon learning of the group's mule, sees to it that the ostler Naradin of Othendel purchases the mule for 360d. He complains a bit, but Hearn says something to him under his breath and the ostler, a scowl on his face, walks away and argues no more.

Once all the warband's gear is assembled, Sir Hearn again leads the way through town, this time to the south of the cluster of buildings towards the docks. Skirting the market and its attendent orderly chaos, the group passes by a temple - Peoni it seems - a lexigrapher, several halls and tenements, and a few other guildsmen. At the northermost dock, Sir Maldan Harabor and a liveried escort of a ten heavily armed foot in mail hauberks await. Servants are directing longshoremen in the loading of trunks and barrels. The waiting river craft - a talbar - is a large one for its type at more than forty feet long. The boat is painted black along the gunnels and mast with the strakes daubed in a yellowish color. From the stern flies a gold pennant, charged with a black rampant lion with three red stripes cutting horizontally behind it. The longshoremen take the warband's gear aboard, and then, after Sir Hearn dismisses all the light foot save for two of them, Sir Hearn, the warband, Sir Maldan, the escort, and the servants board the talbar. Sir Maldan moves forward to the prow of the craft, and everyone else finds a place a best he can, trying to stay out of the way of the crew. The warband watches with a practiced eye, content that if trouble comes, they could lend a hand, or even work the boat themselves.

The current of the Kald flows south, and the crew - about a dozen men plus a pilot - make sail to take advantage of wind and current. Before very long, the talbar - called, they learn, the Lady Lesel - is sailing well down the river. Other craft, mostly small talbars and smaller fishing boats, ply the river though none are so foolish as to cut across the course of the Sheriff's craft. Eventually, Sir Maldan beckons a few members of the group forward.

"When we arrive in Tashal, I shall see about arranging an audience for you with the King. Meanwhile, you shall be lodged with the temple of Sarajin - they are noted for their hospitality towards you northmen, which is not always the case in the city. It may take several days for the audience to be granted, and sometimes, it helps to ease the way with a gift or two. I trust you've thought of that already?"

As no member of the warband speaks, Harabor looks incredulous.

"Surely," he says, "you've not come all this way hat in hand?"

"Surely not, dear Sire and excuse the rudness of my companions but they are overhelmed with the beauty of your country and details of this wonderful ship here." steps Laenvan in to prevent further damage.

[OOC] Sorry... been a little busy.

Igon smiles... "Of course my lord, our princes would not dare to send us without a gift for you King. That would be just rude."

[ooc} I just read what I wrote... OOPS! I corrected my spelling.... hopefully you got the meaning rather what was written Matt.

Harabor waits in silence for a few moments, and then, his eyes narrow slightly. He nods, and dismisses Igon, returning to his own thoughts. He does not speak to the warband again that day.

The voyage down the Kald is pleasant. The weather is clear, and the wind steady. The pilot and the crew know their business, and the ship makes rapid progress. On either side of the river, manor after manor is passed - most of them looking prosperous. After a few hours, a large tributary feeds into the Kald from the west - the Hemurin it is called. After this tributary, many more miles pass without seeing a single manor on shore. At nightfall, the ship anchors near the east bank, and a cooking fire is lit on the ship's hearthstone. The meal is simple, but filling, consisting of pork sausages cooked with some onions and green beans. Taking their cue from the taciturn Sheriff, few speak more than a word or two. After the meal, the Sheriff retires to the cabin, Sir Hearn sets the watches, and the rest catch sleep wherever they can.

As they are nearing Tashal a strange feeling of homecoming fills Laenvan and he becomes silent while he enjoys this calm trip. As it is his daily routine even without weapons Laenvan goes at least once daily through his routine in a sort of ghost archery and ghost combat. He invites Ulauf to join him, and any other who is interested, and tries to learn them to visualize a bowshot only in his mind. Potential "targets" are enough at hand...
