The Characters...

Postby Neil » Wed Mar 29, 2006 8:41 pm

The characters come from a small thran in Menglana, Hilzstrom which pays tribute to Horko. This small thran lies along the coast between Geld Bay and Horkofjord and is home to clan Jalten. The Valhakar is Jarlaas Jalten. Several of the warband members are from the island of Sherwyn on the northern coast of Orbaal.

The characters from Hilzstrom have all lived together for years and share common experiences. Within the clan is one ‘Onkel’ Tylarin. Most of the characters were not even born when he went to sea and he has returned 3 years ago after making a profession as a seaman. Most of the thran do not even know how old he is.

He has spent many nights around the hearth telling stories of his adventures to the children of the clan. He keep the children entertained for hours until the mead or ale crept in and he would pass out from drink. Over the last 3 years he has taught the children of the clan a little Orbaalese and a smattering of Harnic.

Two years ago this small thran was raided by Rognan pirates and suffered a few casualties mainly amongst the men but several women were also taken.

The following year a fishing accident occurred where 10 or so of the thran fisherman disappeared. This has left the village suffering from a lack of manpower to tend the boats, fields and woods.

Kalyn Jalten

An attractive woman of 21 years with blonde hair, blue eyes and fair complexion. With her light frame and 65 inches in height she is a surprise to all men for she is also a shieldmaiden for her clan. She is the 3rd child of 3 in her family. Her father was the thran metalsmith but was killed during the pirate raid 2 years ago. Her older brother has taken over the running of the metalsmith. Before her father's death Kalyn would always be found in the metalsmith helping her father and apprentice brother.

As Sordin already had an apprentice he sought another master to take on his daughter as an apprentice. Murael the thran healer thought Kalyn might have what it took to be an apprentice healer and thus took her on.

Her father Sordin Jalten was a younger brother to the village Valhakar.

But in her 14th year Kalyn was apprenticed and trained as a healer in the thran. She has served her apprenticship and has recently received her journeyman's papers as a healer. During her 16th year she encountered several of the women training with weapons, she approached her Uncle and asked permission to start training too. With a shortage of men and the pirates still around the Valhakar gave his permission. So just after the pirate raid Kalyn begun her training in the use of weapons.

Raan Jalten

Standing 69 inches in height with a heavy frame his chest, shoulders and face all bear horrible scars. His hazel eyes, black hair and medium frame make this man look like a bear. Now in his 19th year he is born to Larrin Jalten the village shipwright and younger brother to the clan Valhakar Jarlaas Jalten. Raan always had a fascination with the sea. He is the 3rd son of 4 children. During his early years he would assist his father around the shipyard and docks.

A friend of the family approached Larrin and sought permission for his son to become a fisherman with him. As it would get Raan to sea his father agreed. It was during a storm that Raan's fishing vessel was damaged and about to lose it's mast that Raan leapt to his feet and grabbing the rigging lines which held the mast in place until repairs could be made by the rest of the crew. During this amazing effort several of the other lines and rigging blocks had wounded Raan in the shoulders, chest and face. He lay severely wounded for some time but eventually the wounds healed leaving behind the scars he now bears with pride.

Once healed he continued to sail as a fisherman. He was on a fishing boat when the pirates attacked two years ago and only returned to the thran when the pirates had fled. Briefly engaging them as they retired to their ship.

Atol Jalten (Galtsen) Currently an NPC and huscarl in the Valhakar of Sherwyn's retinue

When Atol was but 3 years of age his parents were killed during a pirate raid in his thran. Left for dead he was found by the clan Valhakar Jarlaas Jalten and taken in as a foster son. He is the 4th oldest of 9 children. He has black hair, green eyes, average looks, medium complexion, medium frame and stands 76 inches in height.

As he was raised he would assist the thran reeve in the tending of the thrans farmland. During Atol's 16th year he was growing bored with the mundane life of a farmer. He sought his father's permission to train as a huscarl. His father agreed and under the eyes of the thran's other huscarls Atol began his training.

During the pirate raid 2 years ago Atol stood with his Valhakar in the clan longhouse and defended it with courage. When the pirates finally fled 3 men lay at the feet of this 18 year old warrior.

Now in his 20th year he has completed his training and stands by his
fathers side.

Atol died of wounds sustained on the 10th of Nolus 720TR, while defending Kjarl from and attack by one of the husarls of Sherwyn.

Anvil 'the Red' Jalten (Pelstrem)

Originally born in the thran of Oakheim he was taken captive by Rognan pirates when he was a young child and made to serve on their ships as a captive. It was during a pirate raid that the Jalten clan working with other clans in the area fought a battle at sea in which the ship Anvil was crew upon was captured all but the thralls were killed. The thralls were given an ultimatum....Join clan Jalten and give your word to honour the clan and you will be spared, do not and become thralls for us. Anvil sensing Sarajin was offering him another chance took the oath.

On returning to Hilzstrom Anvil was fostered to Hergaad brother to the clan Valhakar Jarlaas Jalten. Anvil is the 4th son of 6 children to Hergaad. Hergaad was the thran woodsman. Anvil having had enough of the sea was keen to keep his feet firmly on the land again and started travelling into the woods with his foster father each day.

Anvil now in his 20th year has red hair, blue eyes, a fair complexion, a heavy frame, average looks and stands 73 inches in height.

Hergaad brought Anvil to him during the winter and told him that he had learnt enough that he shoud start taking to the woods himself. There was little more that Hergaad could teach him.

Anvil died of wounds sustained during an encounter with a bear in the wilds. He died on the 15th of Nolus 720TR.

Kjarl Taaren

Born in Horko to Terdri Taaren younger brother to Harka Taaren the clan Valhakar. With blonde hair, blue eyes, average looks and a fair complexion. Kjarl would often be seen around the markets helping his father a mercantyler, but the ships at the docks were what fascinated Kjarl the most. As the day would grow longer and the markets wind down each day Kjarl would usually find any excuse to make his way to the docks.

Kjarl is the 6th child of 9 in his family.

He was sent to Hilzstrom during his 15th year he was apprenticed to Larrin Jalten of Hilzstrom to become a shipwright.

During the pirate raid two years ago Kjarl stood with his master and defended his home and business acquitting himself admirably.

Now 22 years of age with a heavy frame and 69 inches of stature. He has just been granted his shipwrights journeyman's papers.

Kjarl died of wound sustained during a trial by combat against Soalpin Zoen a huscarl of clan Sherwyn.

Ashain Eagatta

Born to an Ivinian father this 18 year old male stands 72” tall, his green eyes, black hair and fair complexion do little to conceal his Jarin mothers heritage. His attractive looks stand him out amongst the rest of his brothers.

Ashain is the 3rd son of 4 children and spent his childhood living in the shadown of his two older brothers. Ashain enjoyed his childhood but he knew from an early age although destiny would see him become a priest of Sarajin it would be his oldeest brother Hrunnis that would eventually take on the mantle of town priest. He has always been plauged by his own feelings of doubt regarding his own abilities.

At the age of 14 Ashain began his studies to become a priest of Sarajin.
carries on the family tradition of being a priest of Sarajin. In the spring of 720 a Jarin uprising on the island saw Ashain thrown into the fight. The Jarin attack caught the Ivinians intially unaware and only through their martial skill and training were they able to hold off the attack. During this uprising Ashain fought bravely helping his family to defend the thranaal and temple grounds holding back several dozens of attackers while awaiting for relief.

The relief did not arrive before the attackers melted away back into the wilds.

For his efforts during the attack Ashain was awarded his axe and thus is now a fully fledged member of the priesthood of Sarajin.

Although a capable warrior and priest he suffers from a lack of confidence which normally finds him failing at whatever task he sets himself. His father has therefore ordered him to go forth into the world and spread the word of Sarajin in the hopes that this will install some confidence in his son.

Tryne Zoen

Tryne was born on the 6th day of Nuzyael,in the year 700TR, in the village of Zoen on the island of Sherwyn in Orbaal. To the parents Arris and Kyli Zoen.

His father is the clanhead and his mother is his 4th and latest wife. Tryne is the 7th of 8 siblings.

Arris Zoen’s 3 other wives are Ylinda, Myriam and Felesra. Ylinda a Jarin women and his first wife has mothered for children Leana, Bjun, Laan and Soalpin. However, Arris ‘s second wife Myriam is barren. His 3rd wife Felesra has mothered three of Arris’s children Nethe, Kjorga and Nera and his latest wife an Ivinian women from Harbaal is the mother of their sole offspring Tryne.

Being the youngest of Arris’s sons and of slight build there was little expectation that Tryne would be a great military assest to the clan. He was not likely to become a huscarl within his lords household like his older brother Soalpin and his lack of martial skill only made this fact more evident.

Whilst growing up things would often go wrong when Tryne was around, this lead other clan members to think that Tryne was bad luck to have around. This ill feeling was often subdued to his fathers position as Valhakar but none the less he became more alone with each passing month. His mother would hear none of the talk relating to her son being bad luck, as her only child she would dote on him endlessly. Soalpin his oldest brother would often openly ridicule Tryne for his bad omens and lack of martial skill.

While attending Bjarri’s feast during his 11th year a friend of the family thought this young boy had other talents and taking him under his charge offered to teach him how to use his mind and not his brawn. His father after discussing this thought it was finally his chance to be rid of the ‘good for nothing’ and agreed to send Tryne off to Melderyn for schooling.

Tryne has returned to Sherwyn in the early months of 720TR.

Mablem Jalten

Born in 702TR on the 1st of Nuzyeal, to the parents of Hergaad and Freyta Jalten in the thran of Hilzstrom in Menglana.

The Valhakar is Jarlaas Jalten brother to his father Hergaad Jalten.

Hergaad has 3 children of his own Deadre, Anvil (now dead) and Merra.

Growing up young Mablem showed a talent for the arts of war from a young age. On his 12th birthday his uncle organised for him to become a huscarl with clan Daas of Ygesdram. Under the talented teachings of Taarohn Daas young Mablem soon learned to improve his talents. Showing a talent for riding Mablem was inducted into the Valhakars mounted huscarls.

This spring young Mablem completed his training in arms and was formally titled huscarl to clan Daas. It has been 6 years since Mablem has been home.

Taking part in the fighting in Menglana against the Ibanvaal invasion Mablem is part of a rearguard defence to buy time for his Valhakar to escape being trapped in fjord by invading forces. He believes he is the sole survivor of this force.

He managed to escape the slaughter after dark. After about a month of travelling he finally manages to make his way back to Hilzstrom and his family. Clan Horko is negotiating with other clans to secure their peace and suggests to Mablem that perhaps he should sail to Orbaal and be with his brother for now.

Arriving in Geldeheim he discovers that Anvil his brother is with the rest of his companions have made their way to the island of Sherwyn and seeking passage on trading vessel he has set off for Sherwyn.
