The Voyage of the not-as-yet fair ship Selata (“no we are NOT carrying tea, thank you very much”), part deux: Across the Gulf of Edérwyn

Kelen 19, 730

Our intrepid band of adventures awakes and prepares to sail for Thârda. Dwilith hires a crew of 14 (at 17d/day) and takes on a cargo of 6 tuns of Palithanian wine costing 1,140d in total, plus 514d worth of stores. This is financed according to shares:

Bevan: 1/2 share, 540d cargo, 257d, stores
Arlen, Ardeth, Dwilith, Imarë: 1/8 share each, 142.5d cargo, 64.25d stores.

Imäre collects her – ahem – “earnings” (i.e. emerald).

As we are about to depart a man-at-arms Kamen of Osforn presents himself at the ship asking for Sir Arlen. He was in the service of Sir Rubar of Tessera who has recently died and asks to take service as Sir Arlen’s squire. He is given passage on the ship until Arlen decides if he is worthy.

We leave port with out further incident.

One of the able-bodied seamen is washed overboard.

The Selata runs aground near Gelimo (which is quite convenient for Ardeth who forgot to ask that we stop off there on the way). There is no major damage, but a seaman suffers a broken arm.

We climb the cliff near the Henge and walk to the chantry where we are greeted by the seneschal who introduces us to Joryk of Gyb one of the resident Shenava. Ardeth asks him about the cube that we carried for Morgan and he brings Ardeth to meet Gery of Lorre one of the Virans.

Gery has some knowledge of Deryni magic. He suspects that the cube Ardeth described may be part of a wards major which is a set of alternating white and black cubes which augment Deryni power, they are usually used to protect or prevent passage across a small area. He has seen a set owned by Ronis of Merkenos, a Lexigrapher in Cherafir. However, he has never heard of the cubes being used to carry a magically encoded message.

Gery also has read of a drug that can disable a Deryni. He read about this drug in a book about the history of Emelrene, the drug was used in some kind of court intrigue during the reign of King Arren VI of the Vasinir dynasty.

Gery allows Ardeth access to the archives under the supervision of Joryk. Ardeth finds a history of Emelrene. He discovers that Arren VI lived from 202 to 297TR and was king from 239 on. There is no mention of the intrigue during his reign.

Ardeth also finds a book about Deryni genealogy. It suggests that half Deryni usually have the same powers as a full blooded Deryni, but their children will have weakened powers unless the other parent was also full or half Deryni. The powers seems to be passed through the mother’s line since half Deryni are more likely to have powers if their mother was Deryni. The book also lists several families who have Deryni blood. Among them are the Parkhursts (Morgan’s house), Edhelen (royal house of Emelrene), Pelenby (Arren II’s mother’s house), and Alagas (Earls of Elorin, a daughter of this house married Chunel the former king of Melderyn). It wonders if the offspring of the King of Chelenby will have Deryni powers, since he has married an Edhelen princess.

At dinner Sir Arlen meets Rori Lenesque formerly of Techen now a Mavari, and hears some ghost stories about the Henge.

We put out to sea the next morning.

Kelen 25, 730

We are overtaken by a ship of the Melderyni Royal Navy. We heave to and are hailed but not boarded.

Kelen 26, 730

A pod of whales is sighted and Dwilith reluctantly decides not to eat them.

Kelen 30, 730

After a few days of fog and storm we put into Aleath without further incident. We pay 36d/day for warfare and a 35d piloting fee.

We check into the 5 Pennies, the most expensive inn in town (a full shilling a room, no meal included). However, Imarë decides to leave us for cheaper quarters at the Sunset Inn. We learn from the innkeeper that Arva of Kerryn, Ardeth’s long lost twin sister, is a rising young star in the theatre, and we invite her to dine with us. We dine on roast capon among other things and consume 2 bottles of Palithanian wine (total bill 384d). Sir Arlen cannot afford his share and is forced to take a loan from Ardeth of 105.5d at 100% interest per day.

Nolus 1, 730

Arva meets Ardeth early. Ardeth learns that among the people who have taken an interest in her career is the Earl of Daenshire, the Chancellor of the kingdom and boss of the Inquisitor General of Tharda.
