THE TRAGIC AND LAMENTABLE ENDING OF KISTOF OF MORLA

in which the good reader witnesses a bloody murder and paradoxical mystery, with much intrigue, seduction, and comedy.

Bear-baiting and cockfighting to follow…

We awake at The Five Pennies. Arlen has quite a hang over. Bevan and Ardeth have breakfast (6d), and head over to ship to see how Dwilith has made out with the cargo. He is at the bonding house, so they go to the Sunset to find Imarë.

The sunset is closed and guarded by armed men, possibly town guardsmen. Ardeth sends a sailor to keep an eye on the inn, and then he and Bevan go to find Dwilith.

Dwilith has sold the cargo and taken on a new one. This is how it works out in the books:

3,300d Old cargo
150d Harbor fee
850d New cargo
250d Stores
170d Crew
406d Misc. (bribes?)
142.25d Mate (Rakir)
285.75d Pilot (Dwilith)
436d 1/2 Owner (Bevan)
134d 1/8 Owner (rest)

Dwilith tells Bevan and Ardeth that someone was murdered at the Sunset Inn and all the patrons were arrested.

Everyone goes to the castle to see the Constable, but are sent the Palace to talk to the Mayor instead. We find out from the Clerk, Lavel of Petweths, that the murder victim was Kistolf of Morla, the great playwright, author of Genin and Queen Eriel.

While we are seeing the Mayor, Gurien of Pamenda, Sir Axel Baldor, commander of the IV Legion bursts in. He is furious about having to guard so many prisoners.

We go the theatre and find it closed and the Merchant of Shiran canceled. The doorkeeper tells us that Kistolf was an “arrogant son of a bitch” and had a rival named Telo of Dick, author of the morality play Hook of Evil (sounds like a film noir). Arva tells us Kistolf was not at the theatre all day yesterday, but that that isn’t very unusual.

Bevan searches Kistolf’s rooms and finds it totally empty. Arlen brings food for Imarë.

At dinner Arva, Ardeth, and Bevan meet Sir Orson Bylander the Sheriff of Erynashire. He is a guest of Sir Arren Lydel the Melderyni Ambassador, they we going to see the play. Sir Arlen stays in the room. Sir Arren takes a liking to Bevan and asks her to dine with him at his house the following night. She agrees.

Cut to Imarë in the dungeon. She hears the story of the murder and the details from one of the serving girls she is incarcerated with. Kistolf was at the inn with four men, and they were all arguing. Two of the men we regulars, Kalam and Lubos, and they seemed to be on the side arguing against Kistolf and the other two men. During the day a woman came to see Lubos and stayed for less then an hour. The girl thinks this woman was affiliated with the church of Halea. They keep the room to themselves and all left after midnight. The body was found at dawn and the guard summoned. None of the four men the girl saw were arrested, and no one has been asked any questions.

Dascomb is sent with a note for Imarë and she is able to write the information she has learned on the back of the letter. On the way back to The Five Pennies Dascomb is attacked but he kills the assailant and escapes.

We learn from Arva that on the opening night of Merchant, Kistolf was accompanied by Alandia the High Priestess of the Church of Halea. She describes her as an ambitious woman who has an on-going feud with the church of Larani. It is rumored that she got her temple built by seducing officials (Sir Axel?). Arva doesn’t understand why they were together, since she doesn’t think Kistolf liked women, but he may have been a Halean.

Merchant of Shiran is about a merchant (surprise) who has an opportunity to make a profit at his daughter expense (selling her in marriage to a rich man?). However, the daughter loves a poor knight. In the end the father marries his daughter to the knight, choosing her happiness over profit.

Arlen goes to the temple of Larani, to see if he can find out anything. He meets Sir Tokos a knight of Larani and Sir Andar of Gryst the knight-commander of the temple. They are typical religious fanatics and generally of no use at all to our investigation. They suggest that Sir Axel has been “corrupted” by Alandia.

Bevan’s date. It does not go well. Sir Arren tries to seduce her. She refuses when she discovers he is a child of Arren I (Morgan, Lodros, “your grace”, whatever). He discovers the identity of Trilime. He zaps her with the Deryni mind trick, and she goes out.

Sir Arren lets Bevan go. We discover he removed Dascomb’s memory of the night. Sir Orson get Imarë out of jail, and throws us out of town …
