Pre-Game: ~TR720-730

During our pre-games we learned that the realms of Rethem, Kanday, and the Thardic Republic in Western Hârn were conquered by a Deryni prince of Melderyn named Arren Parkhurst from 720 to 725. Some considered him a renegade. Arren of Melderyn seized the throne of Rethem as Arren I, conquered the three realms, and was killed in single combat with Andasin IV, King of Kanday, on the Norea Plain in 725. Andasin was killed as well, but King Arren I’s body was not found. There are rumors that he cast a spell in his last moments. His son Arren II is now king of the united Kingdom of Tharda with Coranan as its capital.

During 728, Arren II killed the rebellious Earl of Tormau (another Deryni) in a Duel Arcane.

Theron Palliser, a Shek-Pvar, calls together his apprentice Ardeth of Kerryn and two of his kinsman, Sir Arlen Selaty (former squire of his brother Sir Alric Palliser of Towey) and Dwilith Palliser (a pilot and the son of Theron’s cousin), to ask them to complete a task for him. His daughter, Bevan, has disappeared. Shortly after giving birth to a daughter, Trilime, she left for Coranan and has not returned in more then a year.

Theron suspects that she may have been planning to journey to Tashal in the Kingdom of Kaldor on Eastern Hârn, but is not sure. He also suspects that she may have met or may be traveling with a man named Rathbar of Marby, a mercenary and one time bailiff of a fief in the north (Orbaal?).

He warns them that the city of Coranan is likely to be crowded, because he remembers something about a festival tomorrow. Theron outfits Ardeth with 120d and a letter of introduction to the chantry in Melderyn where he studied to assist with the journey.

The three members of the party, and sailor named Rakir, set out from Heroth for Coranan on Theron’s task. Along the road they find many people traveling to the festival, which it turns out to be a state visit of the king’s grandfather (or something like that depending on who was asked).

After entering Coranan the three follow an advertisement to the Tabard & Hearth to find lodgings for the night. As Dwilith enters the tavern he knocks over a tall albino. Dwilith and Sir Arlen notice that the albino drops some type of blade covered with a sticky gray substance. The blade is quickly recovered by a large man who disappears into a back room (after looking at the innkeeper?).

The heroes secure a room (albeit a shady room) for the night, and head out to try to catch some of the parade of the king. Upon seeing the king and his visitor, Sir Arlen realizes that the guest is the Duke of Alagon from Shorkyne, who is the father of king Arren I’s second wife and the grandfather of the present king. Other nobles in the procession included the Earl of Daenshire (Lord Chancellor), the Earl of Westmarch (Marshal), and Marliese Tansel (Laranian Bishop, Chancellor of the Exchequer).

When returning to the inn we hear of a murder that took place during the procession, within sight of the king. A rat-catcher named Hollo, was stabbed in the back. He died almost immediately and was brought to a physician. The rumors are particularly suspicious because as far as anyone knows Hollo was only stabbed once, and also because he was brought to a physician even though he was clearly dead at the time. In the crowd, Ardeth encounters a woman (armed?) who is especially keen on finding out firsthand information about the murder.

In the morning the characters split up to follow personal interests. Sir Arlen attends mass at the Laranian temple, Dwilith goes to the local guildhall to collect sailor’s gossip, and Ardeth goes to a physician to collect some herbs for the journey and to see if there is more news of the murder.

Ardeth finds a physician (an Agrikan?), named Makala of Oshon, near the Pamesani arena. He is the same physician who was brought the body of Hollo the rat-catcher the day before. He confirms that Hollo was stabbed only once and that he was dead when he arrived. He also adds that there was a whitish-gray slimy residue in his wound. Ardeth realizes that the substance must be Gaethipa, a poison made from a plant that grows on the Setha Heath in southeastern Hârn and used by assassins and Navehans.

Back at the Tabard & Hearth the three unite and discover from Anders of Kroll, the innkeeper, that he in fact does know of a Rathbar, and that he has heard that he has joined (started?) a mercenary company in Tashal in Kaldor to protect trade along the Salt Route. They also learn that the name of the woman asking questions about the murder is Sadao, and that she doesn’t like men.

The characters shift their lodgings to the Glaive & Sickle near the Pamesani arena for the night.
