LET’S MAKE THE ELF A TART

Larane 9, 730 TR

Ewen and Arva go back to the harpist to buy a flute for Arva and some music that is popular with the locals. They also get the names of a couple of places to perform, The Noose & Jester, the Bridgetower, and a brothel, which has entertainment. The pair decides to start at the Noose & Jester, run by Yerid of Harbis, where they debut tonight.

Meanwhile, Ardeth, Bevan, Dascomb, and Baya are watching the gate to the island near the castle to see who is permitted to go in and out. The best vantage point found is across the canal just off the Northhaven Wharf. There seems to be no pattern that we can see on who is allowed in. Some persons have no trouble and some are turned back. At noon the guards are replaced on the gate from within the island compound. The relieved guards head across the canal and seem to head for, we suppose, the Arena. While the group is still watching, a small troop of men (eight in number) go through the gate and head to the castle beyond. Six seem to be men at arms. The other two are Sir Blors and another man, who is smaller. At this point the group decides to go to the Bridgetower Inn to see it they see Sir Blors leave the city (the Inn lies inside the gate across from Caer Chakta, his base of operations).Orsa of Parda is the innkeeper there.

Meanwhile, Ewen, Arva, and Imarë go to the Noose & Jester. The performers start with “The Jolly Tinker.” In the audience is a grim, stooped, and grayish man. He is Baraga the Embalmer. He is charged with retrieving bodies from the canals daily. This is all he does and he is reported to make over 1000d per year (there seem to be a lot of bodies). While singing “The Morgathian Came Out of the Crypt,” somebody tries to pick Imarë’s pocket (nice crowd).

The gathering in the Bridgetower is smaller and much more exclusive. Arvind of Aerth, one of the biggest merchants in town at a table with friends playing a game of chance. Bevan later meets one of his guards, Bolus, at the Noose & Jester, ‘accidentally’ spills a drink on him, and strikes up a conversation with him in the guise of looking for work. She is informed that people are always being looked for and she should go to Aerth townhouse on the wharf for work. She would have to pass muster with the sister of Arvind (one Fralys). The family is connected (the brother Parqu, is a member of the Council which runs the city). There are also two Legionnaires drinking here but keeping a low profile (not in uniform). There seem to be bodyguards for all of the clients at the Inn.

There is a single man with bulky clothes which we think covers armor. He also openly carries a sword on his belt. While we are checking out this guy, Sir Blors arrives. He bows to the man we think is the employer of the knight (the older man is with what looks like a 12 year old girl). Sir Blors goes over to the knight and claps him on the shoulder (which is one of the reasons we think he is a knight also). While doing this, he looks over at the party and complains about the company. In talking he refers to the older man as “My Lord.” After this he comes and talks to the party, saying he did not think that the group belonged here. Arva tells him “not as though you offered to help.” Sir Blors proceeds to drink a lot of brandy before leaving the Inn and having the gate opened for him (wardens seem to live in the towers). The performance by Sir Blors seems to kill any hope of anonymity for us.

We find out the knight is one Sir Felkar. His boss is the Lord of Quste (a keep north of Golotha) and is an important individual. He is probably a Baron. That night the noise from the room of His Lordship and his companion keep Imarë awake. While this is going on, Dascomb (outside Bevan’s room as usual) strikes up a conversation with one Pix, one of the Baron’s guards who was watching the room of his master and finds him to be not a bad guy. We find the Lord is Subla Uldseth, Baron of Quste. Sir Felkar is a relative of his and can be rather protective. The group is loyal to the Baron.

In the morning, most of the group breakfasts with Sir Felkar (except Imarë). He asks if anybody heard anything the night before. Could something have happened to the Baron?

After breakfast, Bevan and Dascomb go to the merchant to see if they can get work. They are introduced to Fralys of Aerth (the sister of the merchant and councilman). She is an older woman with blue eyes, who knows Bevan’s family and says this is not a suitable job for her (she knows Dwilith’s father Vestam Palliser who is a mercantyler). She seemed rather put out that Bevan would so lower herself from the exalted position in “trade.” At one point while waiting a stunning young beauty with raven hair and gray eyes walked through the hall, noted Bevan and Dascomb, though said nothing.

Arva and Ewen go to the brothel to arrange a performance (none of the others have gone over well so far). They nail the audition and are hired to play there tonight. Derine of Nerele is the madam in charge. When leaving that night after a good performance, Ewen and Arva are beset by a group of six thugs. Ewen attacks the leader (the only one with a sword) and knocks him down after a couple of hits and the rest run off. This draws some, but not much, attention. They return to the Bridgetower and turn in. All are there save Imarë, who returned to the Smoking Meken earlier.

And what, may you ask, does the title have to do with this?? After much cajoling by players in attendance (with the help of the GM) Imarë is convinced to go hit on Mogger for information. Since he has shown only sexual interest in Imarë (or any other female for that matter) the elf sees this as the group trying to fix the elf up with the midget to pump him for information, or maybe just grins. This is a plea from the elf, if she has to do this, what do people expect her to ask or find out? We also need to decide what our next moves will be. Do we follow up on the upper end of things (the Bridgetower Inn, Sir Blors etc.), or go the slumming route (the brothel)?
