Revenge of the Fungus People

Nuzyael 29, 730

We found our heroes in Tashal, capital of Kaldor, in the aftermath of the Biradian Steed affair. The party was flush with money, except for Arlen. After discussion, the decision was made to proceed on to Chybisa in search of Bevan.

Before we left, we had to make some purchases: a pack mule; food and water; and healing supplies

The party went to the ostler Kirl, who works with the Tower inn. He quotes them a price of 200p for a mule. The party goes to the Ostler’s Common outside of town to get a second opinion. They look at the mule offered by the ostler connected to the Spurs, but decide not to take it.

We then went to see Pesera of Hendel, the usurer. He knows of Rathbar, because he we involved in the financing of Rathbar’s house. The house in on an alley off Medrick Way. Rathbar needed it for a barracks. Oddly, Rathbar had enough money to pay cash for the entire amount.

Imarë buys a Khuzan Crown, with a 20p fee. Dwilith deposits 550p on a 60 day basis. Ardeth deposits 300p, and also asks for a recommendation of a jeweler. Pesera recommends Vuris of Pendalion. We went and got jewelry.

After an early supper, Pesera takes them to Rathbar’s house. They try to talk to the men there. Arlen threatens them. Ardeth asks them if Bevan is there. They claim Bevan has never been there, and shut the peephole. They do not respond to further knocking. The team returns to the Tower.

The next morning Rakir isn’t there, so Dwilith goes to the Spurs. He finds Rakir in the torrid aftermath of his debauchery. Dwilith tells Rakir to come back to the Tower when he gets a chance, and leaves.

Arlen, Ardeth and Imarë go to stake out Rathbar’s house. A woman with a basket comes out. Imarë and Ardeth try to talk with her. Ardeth gives her money and she starts talking. “About 2 years ago, Bevan and Rathbar went on an expedition to the mountains. There was a third man involved and Rathbar didn’t like him and warned Bevan not to have anything to do with him. She didn’t like that. So they fought and dissolved their relationship. Conlon was there.”

Dwilith goes to Conlon and bribes him for more information. Bevan and Rathbar met one Lord Morgan in the Rayesha Mountains, while looking for Kiraz, the dead city of Dwarves. They had a frightening adventure, and Bevan left Rathbar for Lord Morgan.

From there Ardeth went to the Seven Stars to talk to members of the guild of Arcane Lore. He met Beris of Davs in the bar. The masters didn't know anything about Bevan or her expedition. Beris was looking into Gedan, in the north. He saw a godstone, and spoke also of a strange thistle he saw. While he was viewing the godstone, a dwarf come through it. The dwarf was Malbere, a renegade gray mage. He needs to be dealt with by someone. Malbere was banished about 80 years ago from Azadmere. At a feast in honor of a visitor from Melderyn, he messed up a spell in a spectacular fashion. The visitor laughed and prophesied someday Malbere would cause great woe to Azadmere. He is insane and notorious.

Dwilith stops in at the Coin and Broom and inquires as to the state of things with the regulars. He is told that the prince is an idiot, the King of Tharda is disliked, and the current king is a good one. The King is preparing to ride out against someone, probably the Kath or the orcs.

Ardeth goes to talk to Garth, an elderly wizard who knows Rathbar. Rathbar used to escort Garth on expeditions. Garth gives Ardeth a letter on introduction to Astarock, but declines to go there himself. Beris and Ardeth go to see Astarock, who knows Theron and Bevan. He says Bevan stopped by to pay her respects the last time she was in town. She said she was going with Crow (a knight of Tharda who lives in Tashal) to Kiban.

This was last fall, and she was planning on spending the winter there and then probably proceeds onwards from there on an expedition. He also knows who Lord Morgan is. His name is Morgan of Darring, and Astarock warns Ardeth away from attempting to contact or even inquire about him. Morgan is extremely dangerous.

We all went back to the Tower for the night.

The next morning we went to see Pesera to ask about Crow. Pesera said Crow’s real name was Sir Ilken and he lives two doors down from the Tower. He works as a herbalogist and naturalist and tromps around in the woods a lot. Ask at his house for Mrs. Baum. Pesera also noted that the feudal levy is gathering in Olokand, including the Earl of Neph.

We went to see Mrs. Baum. The house is stone and upscale, and inside is filled with plants and similar living, growing things. There is little stone or metal. Sir Ilken’s arms are a green field with a gold crescent moon reversed. Mrs. Baum knew the names of Theron and Bevan, but she cannot reveal where Bevan and Crow were planning on going. They were going to Kiban and beyond, and eventually Crow was going to introduce her to someone, and then they would part ways. In Kiban they would be staying at the Silver Way Inn.

The party retrieved, with some difficulty, the drunken Rakir, and departed for Kiban the next day. The road was dotted with small manors and a town, Querina. On the 2nd day of travel, Ardeth’s spell backfired and Dwilith developed a 4-hour aversion to sunlight. Late in the day the party reached Kiban and went to the Silver Way. Ilian was the innkeeper's name, and he did not wish to answer questions. A bar wench named Dina propositioned the party. Arlen learned from her that Bevan went east, maybe to the Fenlanders. Crow didn't stay the winter; he came and left, but there were others, like Dascomb. Dascomb was Bevan’s ‘back.’ He loved her, but she didn't know it. Crow had a ‘back’ too, named Alfred. She left 3 or 4 weeks ago. She had an audience with the Earl of Balim.

The next morning Arlen asks Dina about the Fenlanders. Not everyone believes in them, she does, and Bevan did. They live in the fens of the Nephen, to the north. Two main tributaries run off them, from the Nephen. They are the small group of trees on the map between Kiban and Minarsas. This is no-man’s land. The Fens are rumored to be home to those trying to escape. They’re almost like a barbarian tribe. Dina thinks Bevan went to investigate them. They spend another night.

Dwilith and Rak go to the Seaman’s Guild. They meet the porter, Phobin. He agrees to fix them up with some seamen that have experience in the Fens. Later, a man-at-arms arrives and instructs the party to arrive at the castle at 10AM the next day.

Peonu 7, 730

The next morning, everyone goes up to the castle. The Earl is there. He is a sharp-faced man. The Earl quizzes Arlen about what he knows of the current political situation. He asks Arlen to be his emissary to Tharda. Arlen, sensing that he is being asked to betray his king, says yes in order to give the party time to escape. He says the party will return west in service of the earl. On the way back, Dwilith and Imarë are followed. They get Rakir to club the guy and get his treasure.

Peonu 8-10, 730

The next day we departed early, fleeing the Earl’s grasp. We ran upstream, passing one tributary and reaching the second one. At this point the rivermen said it was the end of the line and we had to disembark. We spent the night on the riverbank and the next day proceeded inland. Ardeth found a path. After some time we were surrounded and disarmed by a group of Fenlanders called the Vakyr. Their leader is named Forar. He takes us to a village, where we found two outsiders: a Peonian priest names Olthes and Bevan.
